Holy Theatrical Theatrics Batman!

Open Wide and Say Ahhhhhhh!!!!!!

This is not the time and place to discuss if the very famous Batboy, from World Weekly News is real or not, but one thing is for real: Batboy The Musical is.

Based on an outlandish story in the Weekly World News, this Off-Broadway hit is about a half boy/half bat creature who is discovered in a cave near Hope Falls, West Virginia. When the local sheriff brings him to the home of the town veterinarian, the vetÌs wife and daughter, Shelly, teach him to act like a ÏnormalÓ boy. Bat Boy is happy with his new life, but when he naively tries to fit in with the narrow-minded people of Hope Falls, they turn on him. Shelly and Bat Boy, who have fallen in love, run away together and have a blissful coupling in the woods. But their happiness is shattered when Meredith arrives and reveals a secret. Soon the entire town arrives and hears the shocking story. Come in costume on Halloween weekend and receive a special treat!

Of course we all know that Batboy lives and is probably hiding out with Osama Bin Laden, but what shocked me most was that this play is coming to a town near me, actually to my semi-small town. Truly and event like this cannot be missed.

The script, written by Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming, with interweaving lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe, operates with a sardonic but tickling wit. The writers know their two-act, 91-page script is funny. But as it says in their authors' note, "These characters do not know they're funny." The creators' intention, spelled out in directions to the cast, is not to gag-up the organically absurd story or to drown it in silliness.

I'm not sure if it's the absurdity of the story, but it sounds like Batboy the musical is a hit and offers weird, wacky and warm musical message. I've still got more than a month before the show comes to town, but I'm ready to bite into this show!
