Diving In
06.08.2005
Podcasting is hot poop these days. Hotter than summer in Arizona without air-conditioning hot. Of course if you walked down the street and asked any Joe Smo what podcasting was I bet you might get an answer related to pea pods or something. Are blogs really as mainstream, as some of us thought? Steve Jobs called Podcasting "the hottest thing out there" and as the "Wayne's World of radio", before he confirmed the rumor of Apple using Intel processors in Macs, Yep, yeah, uh-huh. I'll admit that I didn't dive into this phenomenon very fast. Anyone can make a MP3 file and post it to their site. Okay, so what? Is this really any different than having a cassette recorder and singing into it and giving to a friend? How well did that go? Now with technology we are blessed with a hi-tech version of the same thing, literally. Does podcasting get any more credibility when celebrities like Paris Hilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger are doing it? Sure, they can afford to add a catchy jingle to the intro, but it's hard to believe that podcasting is still the "Wayne's World of radio" when big bank rolls fund those podcasts. With a mass abundance of blogs and podcasts, it's not always easy to spot the junk from the good stuff, but at least as technology is getting better, maybe the content will follow suite. But that's something that has to be seen to be believed.

Mass distribution. That's how it's different from making a tape. Mass distribution of copies at no extra effort to you.
Otherwise, yeah, basically it's recording a sound file and uploading it to the server for people to download. Not exactly revolutionary, but it's all in the timing, I guess.
