Here's Part Of The Solution To The 10,000 Roundabout Problem

01.23.2006

Be part of the solution

10,000 roundabouts! 10,000 roundabouts! Yes, I said 10,000 roundabouts. Last Friday I mentioned the 2030 (you know in the year tweeeeenty-thiiiiiiiiirty) that there would be 10,000 roundabouts in Bend. This was an estimation, based on the Bend Bulletin article: Roundabout Roulette (Sorry if you don't have an online subscription - boo hiss online subscriptions boo hiss) that mentioned "Bend's 1,117 - give or take - roundabouts ". The article joked about the types of drivers and how it was funny to laugh at The Curb Hugger or The Habitual Signaler, but that was it (well maybe the "Waving Game" reference was right on).

The problem is that as we are heading toward 2030, we are building these roundabouts, but not teaching people how to drive in them. This is nothing short of social disregard. Did I do anything better by stating there would be 10,000 roundabouts? Nope. If anything I scared the pants off the longtime Bendites. Until today I was part of the problem, but now I am part of the solution.

Without further ado, monkeyinbox.net presents: Roundabout Driving and You [712k PDF]

If anyone wants to print up a bunch of these and give them to the Chamber, let's get the ball rolling.

That's frickin' hilarious!

I've been wanting to design a small metal sign and have a printer I work with in California print up a couple of them that basically says "Is your turn signal broken?" and put them up at several of the round-abouts around town. Want to start a business venture ;-)

Do me a favor: I've got a good high-end color laser here at work that can print duplex printing. If you can re-lay out that PDF so that the first 11x8.5 page is the first and last page (front and back of the flyer), and the second page is the inside, I can print up a pile here at the office (I think I have some nice glossy paper, too). E-mail it to me :-)

Send it to jeffatbendchamber.org. I'm sure he'd get a kick out of it.

Jake - I'll send the printable layout your way. I'll even give you the nice high-resolution version. I didn't want to put up a 10mb file on here.

If you'll just e-mail me a URL where I can download it, that'll be perfect.

If anybody wants a tri-fold version of this that you can print up an make a brochure out of, you can find it here:

Thanks for sending me this, Chris -- it's brilliantly done. And for all of you who are asking, I'm hosting the bigger version, because Chris has no bandwidth to spare but I thought it still needed to be shared.

What are you doing for the Superbowl? I am going to be in town for the weekend and thought we could hit a round-a-bout or two and get a bite or something.

Watch out for the two-lane roundabouts! According to the Bulletin they are just around the corner (err... or the roundabout?)
