All In Moments

03.07.2007

going all-in

If you are the betting kind, playing Texas Holdem and having an all-in moment is about as good as it gets. The all-in is a sign of power, or a sign of weakness, or just having guts. That's what makes it so great because nobody really knows unless they call your all-in.

Now, what makes the all-in even better is when you have a poker face. The great thing is that it can be anything, but it needs to be not give anything away. There's a point where after a while of doing this you see that there is luck and skill. The more skill you have, the less luck you need. And when you get really good, if there was no luck involved, you'd win every time.

Over the last month I got a chance to play some live hands at an actual table. A big difference compared to internet tables, and honestly much better. The pros with their emotionless faces are not nearly as fun as someone who holds nothing back. The emotions and responses from the other players is what makes the game so much fun. It's a game where you can play at any time and it doesn't really matter what you are holding.

On thing about the all-in is that once you declare it, you are stuck with it. There are other all-in moments that you make in the world. Email in the business world? All-in!

Is the internet down?

Why?

Email isn't working.

Hmmmm...

Yep, those moments in life and business where you realize how much things have changed over the years. Just in how the huge poker tournaments used to give you maybe at bend a million dollars, and now they are well over ten million. There used to be a time that if the power went out, you could still get work done. These days there is so much technology used on a daily basis that taking any of it away feels like losing a hand. Email, web access, VOIP, etc... The truth is none of this is something you really notice until it stops working. Opps, email, all-in, damn.

On Friday the office email started acting a bit flaky. Basically a very simple setup using our web host. The system works and unless there is a power outage or someone with a backhoe cuts the fiber cable underground it's good to go. Of course a small glitch in the system allowed the upcoming domain name expiration to slip through. So, Monday morning, no email, lost email, and a estimate of 36 hours to be back up and running. Ouch.

So, our email all-in was called. Some technical BS lead us to go without (mostly) for two days. Argh. Not fun. But, if we had a chance to go back to pre-email days would we? Nope. Sometimes you simply have to go all-in and I sure do love the all-in moments.
