Summers Of Reruns Used To Suck

07.06.2007

Summer Fun

Summers used to be full of boring reruns which meant watching the same thing over and over again:

That was how it was and you accepted it. I believe the first time this really changed for me was back in 2000 when Survivor started up. A new show starting in June seemed odd, but it was something to watch among the reruns and quickly turned into a new trend of the big networks putting out something new for the Summer season.

This trend continued more and more with shows dropping the standard Fall kickoff and Spring finales. True, most shows still follow that, but not it's not atypical for a show to start in the Winter and finish in the Summer, or a show starting in the Summer and finishing in the Winter.

But the real question is should you be watching TV in the Summer anyway? A time for doing stuff outdoors in the warm weather, or going on vacations, or camping. Maybe there's more to the idea of just doing something different and breaking the typical routine that you get entangled into during the Fall, Winter and Spring seasons. Summer truly meant freedom when you were younger. No school, just days of hanging out and playing with friends. In a way, Independence Day meant more to me as the last day of school rather than the Fourth of July.

Summer meant staying up late and sleeping in. Watermelon and popsicles and Slurpee's, baseball and swimming. Escape and freedom.

Now with TV shows starting in the Summer, there's a feeling of some of that freedom being taken away. Sure, there's DVRs and downloadable torrents of shows, but the regular schedule returns you to a bit of a routine. Of course as you are older and have a job, the routine never ends. But at the end of a workday do you want to watch TV or sit outside and enjoy the warm Summer air? And trust me, the last few nights here have been more than warm.

Do you yearn for the simplicity of youth, or love the abundance of choices now? Is working hard and playing hard the way to a fun Summer? Hmmmmmmm...

Did the Summers of reruns really suck?

I like some of the summer TV shows (The Closer comes to mind), and Tivo makes it easy to catch the (few) shows I watch when I feel like it. We have an old big screen TV that we can turn around so it faces the outdoors, and we'll often sit outside and catch a show - this only works when it's dark though, and the picture is no where near HD - but it's worth it for the fresh air!
