Winter Everywhere - Part 3
01.09.2009
Friday January 2nd
After Christmas, everything melted and normalcy returned to Oregon. Portland was just wet, and the roads on the pass were hardly covered with snow at all. It was now a week later; after New Years Day. Time to head back over the pass another time.
Nothing extraordinary about the drive over, expect after passing Government Camp the road signs indicated that HWY 26 was closed ahead. Apparently, some mud and trees decided to slide all over the road and make a big mess. Fun. So, this meant going on a little detour.
Flooding.
Snowing.
And traffic jams. Clearly, when a major highway is shut down it creates problems, because no other road is designed to handle that amount of traffic. This road was certainly not up to par, given the fact it had multiple switchbacks and a one-lane bridge. It slowed things down considerably, but the crazy weather along the way certainly kept things from getting boring.
Portland hardly had any snow by now and I-205 and I-5 were clear. You still saw the occasional set of chains on the side of the road, but the general treachery from the prior week was gone.
Saturday January 3rd
Back in Astoria, we now had the chance to check out the sites, minus the snow. Things certainly looked a lot different.
Apparently winter is not done yet, so who knows. Could there be more?
