More Words Than War & Peace, Easily

09.25.2009

many many many

While the blogging engine isn't always running, it doesn't mean that wheels aren't spinning at monkey headquarters. Nope, things have been keeping the staff busy, and I'm certainly not at a loss for words these days. While some might suggest that if you don't write everyday on your site, that you are a slacker, but that's certainly not the case in my mind. As a two-faced blog that features fine written content, there's also the flip side with a focus on photography. And most of us know the common expression about "a picture being worth a thousand words".

Hmmmmmm..... This expression got the monkey thinking. With actual words and plenty of photos, what's the real total of output here? First, let's see how high the bar has been set for what constitutes a lot of words:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_longest_novels

Now, the grand daddy of them all (at a whopping 10 volumes) Artamene contains 2.1 million words, Mission Earth by L. Ron Hubbard hits 1.2 million words, and War and Peace gives us a mere 560,000 words. Plenty of words from these works, indeed.

So, how does the monkey compare? Well, with 712 blog entries (including this one) with an average of 400 or so words per entry that puts me at around 285,000 words. Not bad, but consider this. With 1,211 photo entries, and more than a 100 additional photos in blog posts (and giving a photo a value of 1,000 words), I'm now over 1.5 million total words.

Impressive, if I do say so myself.

Of course, now if I plan on converting the site into book format, I'm damned with reality that it's going to take about 10 volumes to do it. Curses! Curses! Curses!

Yes, there's a little thing called "editing" that's so hard to do when each word and phrase is like a loved child. Well, some more than others.

I have fantasies of producing a blog book (a blook?) but I'd have to pick and choose judiciously.

PS: why the italic font all of a sudden?
