Upgrade, Downgrade, Turn To The Left, Turn To The Right, I Don't Care As Long As She Goes To Martha Stewart Tonight

Being one who's technologically gifted in the ways of technology, I don't back down from a challenge when things go astray. Yep, The Teacher remarked that it's nice having someone around who know's this sort of stuff (and can cook). Now, it's not that she isn't intelligent enough to fix it herself, but sometimes rational thought has little place in the world of computer problems (especially all things Windows).

This occurred the other night when her computer started having "issues". Website addresses weren't going to where they should have gone, and other hints of Gremlin mischief were afoot. I jumped into action scanning for Malware and viruses, then pulling out all the guns I could blast at the suspected virus, trojan, or whatever that was causing the problem. Nothing.

I started to have similar problems on my laptop as well (at home). I would type "facebook.com" into my browser and it would load "yahoo.com". I tried getting recipes from Martha Stewart and instead ended up at Taco Bell's website. Not cool indeed!

I hunted around Google and found this page with the following comment:

May I ask what router you're using? If its a Linksys WRT160n, you may have found your problem. This link provides some insight into the problem, it has to do with the router's DNS:

Hmmmmmm... What a coincidence, just a few weeks ago I "upgraded" to the Linksys WRT160n router. My previous D-Link router worked great with my laptop running Windows XP PRO, but was nothing but problems with the Windows Vista computers in the house. This "upgrade" was supposed to make life easier.

So, were these problems something I could now blame on the router? Yes! Yes! Yes! it is Nice upgrade huh?

Therefore, given the fact that after reading pages and pages of fixes and people contacting Linksys by Cisco and getting nowhere that I'm now officially blaming every problem I know of on this router. Spoiled milk? Blame the router. Blame Linksys. Blame Cisco. Car won't start? Blame the router. Blame Linksys. Blame Cisco. The economy sucks? Blame the router. Blame Linksys. Blame Cisco.

For once, it's not Windows fault. Amazing.

I never trust my router for DNS resolution unless it's running DD-wrt or something similar. I generally will manually set my computer(s) to use either Google's Public DNS or OpenDNS, both of which I've had good luck with.
