Vincent, This Tasty Burger Must Be Tasted

03.04.2010

Metric System knowledge not required

Yep, another food post, but it simply cannot be helped this time. For quite some time I have been on a (sort of) personal mission of finding the best bacon cheeseburger. Before you think I'm becoming the next Bend Oregon Restaurants, let me explain further.

There are certain foods that you simply can't get enough of. You know, foods like Twinkees, chocolate covered cherries and Cadbury Cream Eggs. Had you going there, didn't I?

I'm not going to say the bacon cheeseburger is the best meal you could possibly have, but it's one of those comfort foods that can be ordered almost anywhere you are. When I stated that I was on a mission to find the best one, I've made sure to sample one almost everywhere I travel to. Now, if I'm going to a great pizza restaurant, a great Chinese restaurant, a great Mexican restaurant, a great seafood restaurant, or a great steak house, I'm NOT ordering a bacon cheeseburger. I like variety, and other things, and this entry is not about the best steak, best fish tacos, etc. But when I can order a bacon cheeseburger, I do.

Generally, when I write about burgers I'm not all that serious. Reviewing the Whopper , or the Triple Whopper or complaining about beetroot burgers down under.

One thing that I've noticed in this quest, is the farther I go from Bend, the more I crave the burgers in Bend. It took me a while to realize this. Maybe it was while I was eating at Klewz Kafe near the Blue Mountains down under that while it's fun to venture out to find good food the best simple foods are always back home. Maybe that's not the case if you don't live in Bend and want a truly tasty burger. I think some of that has to do with the Metric System.

So, last night I truly found the bacon cheeseburger I've always wanted.

Now, while mighty fine burgers can be found at Dandy's Drive-In, Jakes Diner, The Black Bear Diner, I always feel the best burgers come from Pilot Butte Drive-In. This might be a personal preference, but I did have to gourmet it up to reach this level of Bacon Cheeseburger Uptopia.

I'm not claiming I've invented the best bacon cheeseburger ever, but to reach Bacon Cheeseburger Uptopia I had to deviate from the standard Pilot Butte menu. I started with The Blue Cheeseburger which uses crumbled blue cheese and blue cheese dressing. Now while this might not be your thing, give it a try sometime, it works amazing on a burger. Now, the obviously lacking element in this burger is bacon, so add it to your order. I had one employee agree that "everyone should add bacon to this burger". I agree 100-percent. The final quintessential addition was grilled onions. YES! Grill those suckers, it makes such a difference (the first time I had the onions grilled was last night).

The result: AMAZING.

Bacon Cheeseburger Uptopia was reached. I didn't even have to be on death row. Bonus!

Dang it. You're making me hungry. Too bad they close by the time I get home from work tonight :(

The worst thing was when closing time went to 3pm. Then it moved up to 5pm and now it's 7pm. Hopefully the glory days of 9pm will return.
